| Natural gas is generally regarded as a natural mixture of hydrocarbons found issuing from the ground, or obtained from specially driven wells. Its composition varies across the board (depending on where it is found), but its chief component is "methane", which usually makes up about 80-95 % of the gas. The rest of the gas is made up of varying amounts of other gases like ethane, propane, butane, and a host of hydrocarbons. |

Natural gas that originated from the fields offshore Malaysia typically comprised of methane as the major component (approx. 79%); ethane (approx. 11%); propane (approx. 5%); butane (approx. 3%) and condensate or natural gasoline (approx. 2%). The recovery or production factor of each of this component varies according to, among other things, field composition, rate of production and the plant's mode of operation. After the separation process at the Gas Processing Plant (GPP), the predominantly methane is produced in the form of gas; whereas ethane, propane and butane are collected as Natural Gas Liquids (NGL); while condensates are liquids at room temperature and pressure. These components have their specific use as fuel or feedstock.
Commercially, methane is also known in the market as natural gas, sales gas or dry gas; while ethane is marketed as chemical feedstock; and propane and butane marketed as Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). |
