Natural Gas 'The Story'

Origin

The story of natural gas goes back during the dinosaur's era. It's all started million of years ago when the remains of plants and animals (called organic material) were buried beneath the earth's surface under layers of sand and rock. The layers contaminated to build up and the organic materials were buried deeper and deeper.

Formation

After million of years as cause of increasing temperature, pressure and micro-organisms started to act on the trap fossil remains. Just like food in a pressure cooker, the organic material was slowly 'cooked' turning them into fossil fuels of various forms such as coal (solid), oil (liquid) and natural gas (gaseous). Oil forms first, then as the temperature and pressure increases at greater depth gas begin to form.

Drilling

Natural gas is often found inside the earth crust together with oil (petroleum). Once the area where crude oil and gas is established, usually after seismic surveys and environmental assessments are performed. A drilling facility is built at the location. Reaching the gas deposit requires drilling through layers of send, slit and rock. The raw gas is then pumped from underground to the surface and into pipelines.

GPP

This is where PGB comes into the picture of gas processing, firstly the gas are then piped to our Gas Processing Plants (GPPs) in Kerteh to be clean, where non-hydrocarbon gasses and impurities such as carbon dioxide, water and sulphur are moved.

Transmission

Since the gas would have to sometimes travel hundreds of kilometers to reach its destination, compressor stations are built along the transmission pipeline. This ensure that the gas will flow under high pressure at all times during its long journey.

Delivery

Once the gas is clean we distribute it to our customers via our transmission pipelines. Natural gas has many uses. Some of it uses are cooking, heating and air-conditioning. In the industrial sector, it can be used as raw material for products such as paint, fertilizers and plastics, in addition to providing energy for food processing, glass making and steel fabrication. It is also widely used to provide electricity via gas powered stations.
