Centralised Utility Facilities

Background

To support PETRONAS' development plan in turning Malaysia into a regional petrochemical centre, the CUF project has been implemented in Kerteh, Terengganu and Gebeng, Pahang. Strategically located near two Integrated Petrochemical Complexes (IPCs) in Kerteh and Gebeng, the CUF's integrated design concept provides its customers with maximum benefits in terms of interplant synergy and operational efficiency, economy of scale and reduced capital outlay.

The CUF project is a facility that will supply the utility requirements for the petrochemical industry from common and centrally located utility facilities within the petrochemical complex. The plant is modular in design providing flexibility for future expansion.

Operations

The CUF plants at Kerteh and Gebeng have successfully commenced operations and the supplying of utilities to the Integrated Petrochemical Complexes (IPCs) in stages since November 1999. The plants first came on-operation with the first delivery of electricity on 19 November 1999 for Gebeng and 27 January 2000 for Kertih. The Heat Recovery Steam Generator system was brought online in Kertih in June 2000 and Gebeng in August 2000. This was followed by the Air Separation Unit (ASU 1) plant which produces gaseous low pressure nitrogen and oxygen to the IPC customers. The dematerialized Water and Waste Water Treatment plants were commissioned in July 2000 and August 2000 respectively.

CUF utilize water and air as feeds to produce a range of industrial utilities such as electricity, steam, nitrogen, oxygen, dematerialized water, cooling water, boiler feed water and raw water. In addition, CUF also provide waste water treatment services.

There are 4 main units which produce the respective utilities.
1. Co generation Unit -produce- Steam, Electricity
2. Air Separation Unit (ASU) -produce- Oxygen, Nitrogen, Argon
3. Waste Treatment Unit -produce- Demineralised, cooling, potable and boiler feed water
4. Waste Water treatment Unit -produce- Treatment of waste water
